Our Story

Art rooted in
2,500 years of tradition

Kritira was born from a simple belief — that the women and men who have kept Mithila art alive for millennia deserve to thrive, not just survive. We're here to make that happen.

How it started

The art was everywhere.
The artists were invisible.

Mithila art has painted the walls of Bihar's homes for over 2,500 years. It's been exhibited in the Louvre, the Smithsonian, and galleries across Europe — yet the artists who create it often earn less than ₹200 a day.

Kritira began with a visit to Madhubani in 2023. Sitting with a 70-year-old master artist, watching her paint a fish that her grandmother had painted, we realised the problem wasn't awareness — it was access and fair commerce.

So we built a direct bridge. Every painting, saree, and dupatta on Kritira is bought directly from the artist at a fair price, authenticated, and shipped to you with the care it deserves.

What we stand for

Our Values

Artist First

Every product is priced to ensure the artist earns fairly. We partner directly — no middlemen, no compromises.

Rooted in Tradition

We work only with artists who practice the classical Mithila style — hand-ground pigments, bamboo brushes, motifs passed down through generations.

Authenticity Guaranteed

Every painting comes with an artist certificate. If it's on Kritira, it's genuine — never a print, never a reproduction.

Delivered with Care

Paintings are rolled in acid-free tissue, wrapped in bubble wrap, and shipped in rigid tubes or flat boxes — insured end to end.

The tradition

What is Mithila art?

🌿

Natural pigments

Colours derived from turmeric, indigo, lampblack, and flower extracts — the same palette used for centuries.

🎋

Bamboo brushes

Artists use hand-made brushes from bamboo twigs and cotton wrapped at the tip to create the characteristic fine lines.

🐟

Sacred motifs

Fish, lotus, birds, gods, and geometric patterns — each motif carries meaning rooted in Mithila's mythology and daily life.
